THE POETRY SOCIETY OF TENNESSEE

The Poetry Society meets the first Saturday of each month (except June, July, and August) to promote poetry. The Mid-South Poetry Festival is held the first Saturday in October and is our big event.

    6:30 pm - Festival Hospitality at the home of Sarah Hull Gurley, 9141 Forest Bend Court (directions below).  PST will host a pot-luck feast.  Festival Collection will be read and winners of the Grandmother Earth Annual Contest will be announced. This is much TOO good to miss.  We’ll see you there!

Workshop Leader

Ann Marie Wranovix is a Professor of Literature and Languages at Christian Brothers University and has been teaching a variety of literature and writing classes for 22 years. She received her BA in English from Vanderbilt and her PhD from yale.  She has had poems published in Old Hickor Review and Four Quarters.

Follow Poplar Ave. to Forest Hill Irene Road and turn south.  Cross Poplar Pike and the railroad track.  Forest Bend Court is approximately one mile from Poplar on the left, surrounded by a black wrought iron fence.  Three mailboxes are on the south side of the drive, one will have bright balloons tied to it.  The gate will be open and the house is on the right on a slight rise.

RULES

Mail entries with proper fees, postmarked by August 13 and received by August 20.

Mail to Pat Smith, 1035 N. Barksdale, Memphis, TN 38107-3102.

            1.  All poems must be original and, except for #25, unpublished.                     

2.  Unless otherwise indicated all contests are 40 line limit, any subject, any form.  Count lines carefully as rules on length are strictly observed.

            3.  Only one poem per contest except #1 which has no limit as long as entry fees are paid.  If one poem is on two sheets of paper, staple the pages together.  Do not enter the same poem in more than one contest.

            4.  Type all poems on 8½ X 11 inch white paper.  Send two copies with name and number of the contest on upper left corner of both copies. Only one copy should contain your name and address in upper right hand corner.  Rules of NFSPS will apply when in doubt.

            5.  All entries MUST include a festival registration fee of $5 and $1 per poem, except #1 & #25.  Non-members of PST must pay  $2/poem in #1.  #25 is $3/poem.  Entries will not be accepted unless accompanied by an official registration form.  Photocopies  are acceptable.  Do not send the entire contest brochure.  Make checks payable to: The Poetry Society of Tennessee.

            6.  Only first place winners will be published in Tennessee Voices except for #1.  Copies of the yearbook containing these winners are $5.00 to members and available to non-members for $10. It will be published in August, 2009.

$2  The Sam Sax Memorial Awards by Tom McDaniel.  Free verse, subject:  the next to the last word, 30 line limit.

#3  The Frances P. Denington Memorial Awards by Mick Denington.  Free verse, any subject, 25 line limit.

#4  The Sarah Catherine Anderson Memorial Awards by Sarah Hull Gurley. Free verse, subject: the rain last night, 24 line limit.

#5  The Pam Whitworth Memorial Awards by Patricia W. Smith.   A narrative poem in blank verse, 60 line limit.

#6  The Diane M. Clark Awards, any form, subject: feathers, 30 line max.

AWARDS $25, $15 & $10

#7  The Frieda Beasley Dorris Memorial Awards by  Bess Beasley Wells.  Any subject,. form: dorsimbra. A dorsimbra has four lines of Shakespearean sonnet, four lines of free verse and four lines of iambic pentameter blank verse.  The first line repeats as the last line.  No contractions allowed.

#8  The Ann Carolyn Cates Awards, any form, subject: hugs.

#9 The Terrel A. Cates, by Ann Carolyn Cates, a humorous poem, any form, subject Merlot wine.

#10 The Pat Crocker Awards, form: rhymed, iambic pentameter couplets, any subject, 16 -32 lines.

# 11 The Jo Elliotte Memorial Awards by J. Pomford Harris.  Any subject,  form: Pirouette. A pirouette is 10 lines, 6 syllables per line. Line 5 is repeated as line 6 with a “turn” at that point.

#12 The Ruth Boyd Pell Memorial Awards by Elizabeth Pell.  Any subject, any form, 30 lines.

#13 The 1st President of PST Awards in memory of Raymond McCarty by Margaret McCarty.  Any subject. Form: Shakespearean or Petrarchan sonnet.

#14 The Chad Jones Honorary Awards by Nellie Jones. Any subject.  Form: Shakespearean sonnet.

#15 The Joan T. Strauss Memorial Awards by Russell Strauss.  Any form, subject, line or title, but one of the following MUST BE the 1st line of the poem: “Though the snow was swirling, the truck didn’t stop”, “What was lost could never be replaced”, “Awakening just before dawn”, or “Clasping his mother’s hand, the child”. 40 line limit.

#16 The Isabel Joshlin Glaser Awards any form, subject, Coming Feature, Real or Fantasy, 30 line limit.

#17  The Florence Rogers Tuck Awards by Leslie Blakeburn form: a pair of related haiku, any subject.

#18  The Jeanine Mah Awards, free verse on nature.

#19  The Pat and Sarah Double Judge Awards, by Pat Crocker and Sarah Gurley, each will independently judge the entries and TWO sets of awards will be presented. Any form, subject: women in red hats.

 #20 The Bobby Drobeck Memorial Awards by Russell Strauss,  A narrative poem for young people.  The poem may be for any age from grade school through adolescence.  Please write possible age group at the bottom of the poem.  40 line limit.

#21  The Malu Graham Awards, Any subject, free verse.

#22 The Tanka Awards by Florence Bruce. Any subject, form: Tanka, a Japanese form of 5 lines with syllable.count of 5, 7, 5, 7, 7.

#23 The Frieda Beasley Dorris Memorial Award by Florence Bruce, An elegy (grief) or ode (praise)  any subject with or without rhyme.

#24  The Margaret Williams Smith Dyer   Memorial Award by D. Beecher Smith, II, any subject, form beech.  A beech is a 5 line poem with syllable lengths of 2, 5, 5, 3, 8; 1st & 5th lines rhyme, 2nd, 3rd and 4th lines rhyme

#25  Mid-South Poetry Festival Collection ($3 entry fee).  Open ONLY to persons attending the festival.  Limit - one side of one 8½ X 11 sheet.  Published poems may be entered.  Do not enter a poem in this contest that has been previously published in Mid-South Poetry Festival Collection.  Showcase your best poem.  Page with name will be photocopied and must be legible and include publishing credits.  All entrants will receive a copy of the Collection.
