Contest Rules:  All entries should be inspirational or on any subject suitable for a Christian publication, and may be previously published or unpublished. *Except for No. 3, entries will not be considered for publication, only for awards. 

NATIONAL AWARDS:

Welcome, writers everywhere. 

1.  Poetry:  50-line limit. $50, $25, $15, $10

2.  Prose:  2000-word limit. Fiction or non-fiction. $50, $25, $15

3. *Devotionals: 2-page limit. $50, $15, $10

Must include scripture and prayer. Photos, line drawings, etc. are optional.

*Non-winning entries will be considered for publication only if written permission is included. Previously published work will be considered for publication only if reprint rights are included.  All authors whose work is used will receive copies of the collection upon publication as well as those who attend the conference.

CONFERENCE AWARDS:

Open to those who register to attend the conference:

4. Poetry:  40-line limit. $50, $15, $10

5. Prose:  2000-word limit. $50, $15, $10

All prose must be double spaced; poetry may be single or double spaced.

Fees:  A fee of $5 entitles you to enter one entry.  $2 for each additional entry. Critique from the judges is available for $10. Write the word critique on the upper right corner of each entry to be critiqued (limit 6 works in each category). No limit on the number of entries in each contest. Make checks payable to Life Press and mail to P. 0. Box 2018, Cordova, TN 38088. Postmark by July 6.  Send one copy of each original entry with name and number of the contest and no identification. Send one copy with name, address and telephone and  e-mail, if available.  Include a cover sheet with your name, address, telephone number, email and list of all entries in each contest with total fees paid. Please send a self-addressed stamped envelope for winners’ list.   Entries being critiqued will be returned at the conference or if a SASE is enclosed.

This conference will be of benefit for writers regardless of whether or now you write

for Christian publications.

Please pre-register by July 30.  $25 includes lunch.

Conference Fees: A $35 Registration fee entitles a participant to send one entry ($2 each additional entry), have all entries (limit 6 works in each category) critiqued and includes Continental Breakfast and lunch.

Registration (including food, but with-out entries) is $25.

Registration (including food) with one entry but without critique is $30.

Spouse Registration is $20.

9:00 Welcome and Introductions: Frances Brinkley Cowden, founder of Life Press Christian Writers Association  and editor/publisher of Grandmother Earth and Life Press.

 

 9:25  Creating a Character for Tellable Stories. Anne Hall Norris

    Author of  The Charm Bracelet and Other Stories and  Uncle Nip, Anne Norris has received regional and national    awards  and is noted for her humorous stories. A member and past president of Memphis Story Tellers' League, she is featured in the story tellers’ anthologies. She is a former member of National League of American Pen Women and is a member and teacher at Cross Roads United Methodist Church.

10:25   An Author’s Viewpoint: Louise Murphy Gearin

   Louise Murphy Gearin published four books in 2007 including the following novels: Separate Paths, An Unexpected Blessing, Murderous Affections, and a creative non-fiction book, Thicker Than Water, about a 19th Century train robber from her home town. She has been published nationally and internationally and has won many awards. She will share experiences and answer questions.

1: 30  Panel Critique: A look at polishing work before it is sent out by members of local critique groups. Send one poem or up to two pages of prose (first and last pages of an article or story by July 15)

Cindy Beebe has poems appearing, or forthcoming, in several journals, including The Southern Review, The American Poetry Journal, The Evansville Review, Rock & Sling, The National Poetry Review, and Relief.  She is involved in music ministry and inner-city ministry with First Evangelical Church. 

Michael R. (Mick) Denington, Bartlett, TN., is a retired Air Force colonel and writes poetry and fiction.  He has won numerous prizes and his works have appeared in local, regional and international publications.  He is active in local and state writing organizations and a past president of  Tennessee Writers Alliance and current president of the Poetry Society of Tennessee. Mick judges poetry contests and was editor in chief of Writers on the River for five years.

Malu Graham won the Hackney Award for fiction (Birmingham Southern College). She has poems and short stories published in St. Petersburg Times, Emerald Coast Review, Octoberfest Mag, Broomstick. She has won numerous prizes in poetry and prizes in fiction from Florida Writers’ Competition, Grandmother Earth  and Life Press. She is one of the critics for the Poetry Society of Tennessee’s workshops and has won numerous awards including Grandmother Earth’s top prose award.

Dr. Brenda L. Caldwell

“Dr. B”

Dr. Brenda L. Caldwell is a national empowerment speaker, Psychologist, program developer and life coach with over 13 years experience.  She is also president/CEO of B. Caldwell Consulting, an empowerment firm that contracts with organizations throughout the country. A native of Memphis, Dr. Caldwell holds a Masters and PhD in Christian Psychology from Jacksonville Theological Seminary as well as a B.A. in Communications from the University of Memphis. Affectionately known as “Dr. B,” she delivers messages from the heart that are potent, powerful and purposeful. Her new book “From Charcoal to Diamond: Greatness is in You!” is inspirational and uplifting.

 She is a fifth year annual faculty member of the National Youth Professionals’ Institute in Washington, D.C.  Dr. B serves as a consultant, providing staff development trainings, team building trainings and other empowerment workshops for professional associations throughout the country. As a life coach for women, Dr. B can also be heard bi-weekly on 1340 WLOK’s “Focus on Women” talk show, giving words of wisdom and insight. She also conducts quarterly Women of Worth Empowerment Seminars to help motivate women from all walks of life to fulfill their purpose and destiny.

As a self-described Dream Builder, Dr. B has devoted her professional life to helping others to be uplifted, be empowered and to be inspired.

DIRECTIONS TO THE  CONFERENCE:

Covenant United Methodist Church, 8350 Walnut Grove, Cordova, TN:

North East corner of Walnut Grove and Walnut Bend, just off Germantown PKWY. Approaching Memphis from I-40 take the Nashville east exit and then go past next Nashville exit and take the Walnut Grove east exit. Continue east on Walnut Grove over the overpass of Germantown PKY. The first traffic light will be Walnut Bend. Turn left and you will turn immediately into the parking lot on your right.

From East TN on I-40 take the Germantown Exit (South). Turn left on Trinity. Go to the first 4-way stop. Turn right (Walnut Bend).  Just before you get to the traffic light, you will see the church on your left. Turn left into the church parking lot. Go right around the church to the Smith Center on the South side. If you miss Trinity, turn left onto Walnut Grove and continue to first traffic light. 

     From South Germantown Rd or Comfort  Inn, go north and turn just after Lowe’s onto Walnut Bend.  Go just past the first traffic light which will be Walnut Grove. The church is to your right.

LODGING:

Comfort  Inn, 7787 Wolf River Blvd, 901-757-7800:  A limited number of rooms have been reserved for Life Press Christian Writers Conference until July 25 for $62, single or double.  DIRECTIONS: South of Walnut Grove, just off Germantown PKY to the west:

AR: Approaching Memphis from I-40 take the Nashville east exit and then go past next Nashville exit and take the Walnut Grove east exit. Continue east on Walnut Grove and turn right onto Germantown PKY  (just after the Agri center).

 From East TN on I-40 take the Germantown Exit South and go past Walnut Grove. When you see Office Depot and Walgreen’s, turn right on to Wolf River Blvd. Comfort Inn is to the left.
